What is an Orthotist or Prosthetist?


DESCRIPTION


An Orthotist and Prosthetist is a highly specialised and skilled member of the medical team who deals with the measuring, designing, manufacturing and fitment of products to support or replace a part of the human body. The work they do enables people to feel like whole, fully-functional human beings again - and this is the key to being a successful Orthotist or Prosthetist.

         

         

            

ORTHOTICS

Includes products such as knee braces, neck braces, leg braces, hand splints, foot supports, corsets and shoe modifications.

PROSTHETICS

Includes products such as artificial legs, artificial arms and artificial breasts.

Several allied services are provided which include elastic (medical) stockings and pantyhose, wheelchairs, crutches, walking frames, walking sticks as well as nursing aids such as bath chairs, bed pans and commodes. Orthotists and Prosthetists have laboratories where all types of Orthoses and Prosthesis are produced from basic low-cost components to those utilising the very best of technology - including sports and high activity Prosthesis.
